SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
WHAT IS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT?
The Skills Development Act aims to expand the knowledge and competencies of the labour force in order to improve productivity and employment. The Main Aims of the Act are: To improve the quality of life of workers, their prospects of work and labour mobility.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
An entity’s biggest asset is its employees, therefore investing in your human capital through training initiatives ensures that talent is enhanced. Businesses give great attention to the recruitment process to ensure that qualified and suitable employees are obtained, the retention is vital and is largely achieved by investing in your staff’s professional development.
Replacing talent can cost more than retaining employees.
As the landscape of business becomes progressively competitive, improving employee performance is essential for success.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?
The legal requirement as per the Skills Development Act stipulates an entity with a payroll exceeding R 500,000.00 per annum (R 41,666.66 pm) is required to pay the SDL (Skills Development Levy)
The SDL is 1% of payroll, paid monthly to SARS. (Reconciled on the EMP201 form monthly)
Annual SETA (Sector Education Training Authority) submissions require 12 months of EMP201’s as proof of SDL payments.
Every entity is allocated to a specific SETA industry, this is originally done by SARS, if incorrect a SETA change can be done if required.
